Sateen refers to a three or two over one thread weave, which gives it a sumptuously smooth feel and a slight sheen. Cotton sateen fabric is heavier and slightly warmer then percale. Ideal during during chilly nights. As a bonus, it is also easy to iron.

In general, the higher the thread count, the denser and softer the fabric feels, provided that high-quality cotton and single-ply thread are used.
